The India Meteorological Department (IMD) escalated its weather warning from yellow to orange on Monday, signaling the potential for heavy downpours in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts.
Officials reported that persistent heavy rain since early morning inundated low-lying areas and railway tracks, severely disrupting road traffic and suburban train operations during peak hours. Nariman Point recorded an intense 104mm of rainfall between 9 and 10 a.m., marking one of the season’s highest hourly totals, with other South Mumbai areas also experiencing significant precipitation.
Central Railway and Harbour Line services faced disruptions due to flooded tracks at several stations, while Western Railway reported largely normal operations, though some commuters noted minor delays. A high tide of 4.75 meters expected at 11:24 a.m. heightened concerns about worsening waterlogging.
